What To Look For When Buying A Screwdriver

The screwdriver is one of those essential tools that should be present in every home. Indeed most homes, even if the homeowner has no interest in DIY, will have at least one screwdriver hidden away in a draw, tool box or some other out of the way place. To the uninitiated all screwdrivers may look the same or at least very similar, but there is a reason why screwdrivers are often sold in sets. There are differences between types and makes of screwdrivers; this means that there are a few things that need to be considered when buying screwdrivers. Today there is a wide range of stores that sell screwdrivers, with many thrift stores and supermarkets offering their own range of tools. Screwdrivers sold from such stores are likely to be on sale at extremely low prices, and although a low price is obviously tempting, with tools, the old adage of you get what you pay for is certainly true. Cheap screwdrivers are normally manufactured from inferior metals and will often rapidly wear away at the tip. This could result in an unusable screwdriver, but could also result in the screws themselves being damaged, and a damaged screw will be both unsightly and far more difficult to remove in the future. The first thing to look for when buying a screwdriver is therefore a manufacturers’ name. Always buy the best screwdriver that you can afford. There are certain manufacturers who are recognised as being experts in their field, the likes of Stanley and Draper, and these manufacturers are known to produce good quality screwdrivers. Good quality screwdrivers are made from high grade materials, and whilst it may be difficult to determine the metal in manufacturing, comparing good and bad quality handles is far easier. People may assume that one screwdriver will do all jobs, but there are dozens of different screwdrivers available, all with a different job to do. Hence why sets containing multiple screwdrivers are sold. The second main thing to look at when buying a screwdriver therefore is the type and size of the tool. There are three main types of screwdrivers that should make up a household’s set of screwdrivers. There is the single slot, the most common, but these single slot screwdrivers come in a range of sizes, and will fit different screw sizes. The same is also true of cross heads, or Philips screwdrivers. It is therefore preferable to have three or four of each type, in different sizes, with one of these being a stubby screwdriver, perfect for tight spaces. Another essential screwdriver in any set is the ratchet screwdriver, which will allow clockwise or anti-clockwise turning of the screwdriver blade with a lot less effort than a manual screwdriver. As a general rule, a screwdriver is best utilised when the tip of the screwdriver fits perfectly into the screw head with virtually no movement. This means that attention needs to be paid to the screws that are being tightened or loosened. Screws can have heads with six points, square or hexagon shape, which require specialised screwdrivers for ease of use. The type of work being undertaken will also often mean specialised screwdrivers are required. Jewellers, gunsmiths and electricians will all use screwdrivers that differ from those used by builders. It is important that any DIY project is undertaken with the correct tool, and this applies with the simple loosening or tightening of a screw. The right screwdriver makes the job simple, and ensures that it is done with no damage to the screwdriver or screw.
